About Us
It all started with Skyler.
Shakota is a family business, and it did not start with a business plan. In 2019, my wife's sister and I started our company together. We were family first and business partners second, and we had no idea yet where it would take us.
Skyler was her dog. Skyler was part of every family dinner, every walk around the block, every lazy Sunday on the couch. Then one day, Skyler was hit by a car.
Skyler survived, but was left disabled. Nothing in that house was the same after that day. Things we had always taken for granted, like getting up in the morning, going outside or simply getting comfortable, suddenly needed patience, help and a lot of love. We learned very quickly how much a dog depends on the people around them, and how much the small things matter.
Skyler taught us that caring for a dog is not about the big moments. It is about the thousand small ones, every single day.
Why we do this
From that day on, animals have been at the center of everything we do. Watching Skyler fight through it changed the way we look at every dog we meet. We stopped seeing "pets" and started seeing family members who can't tell you when they are cold, uncomfortable or scared.
That is where the idea for Shakota came from. We wanted to build a place for dogs, made by people who know what it really means to care for one, especially when things get hard.
We started with clothing because comfort is something every dog feels, no matter their size, age or story. A sweater that isn't scratchy. Pajamas that go on without a struggle. A coat that keeps a small dog warm on a winter walk. These may seem like little things, but we know from experience that little things are what make a dog's day better.
To make every dog's everyday life a little softer.
We want every piece we sell to be something we would put on our own dogs without thinking twice: soft, comfortable, easy to put on, and made to be worn and loved, not just photographed.
We want Shakota to feel personal. When you write to us, you are talking to the people who started it. And we want to keep growing into a brand that gives back to the animals who inspired it.
